Obama State Service Complete Set and Table Settings

This color photograph by Matthew D'Agostino is of a complete Obama State service set created in 2015 by Pickard China with designs directly requested by First Lady Michelle Obama. The set applies, as desired by Mrs. Obama, modern design, practical food service, and respect for tradition. Unique design features include a representation, in white relief, of an 1806 service plate belonging to Secretary of State Madison, and a shift from primary colors used more recently in State Dinners to the new selection of Kailua Blue, a unique color chosen by First Lady Michelle Obama to represent the blue waters of Hawaii, President Barack Obama's home state. The reliefs portray leaf fronds and pinwheels in the French Empire style. When applied, the Kailua blue is fluted, and surrounded by a textured gold rim, and gilt line.
